Every NYC winter leaves the same mark: white, crusty salt lines on the carpets and floor mats. Left alone, salt keeps pulling moisture into the carpet, stiffens the fibers, and can lead to musty smells. Here's how to deal with it.
Quick DIY method
1. Vacuum first. Get loose salt crystals out before adding any liquid, or you'll just spread it.
2. Dissolve the salt. A common approach is a mix of warm water and white vinegar (roughly equal parts). Spray lightly — don't soak the carpet.
3. Agitate and blot. Work it in with a stiff brush, then blot with a clean towel. Repeat until the white line is gone.
4. Dry completely. Leave windows cracked or run the heat. Trapped moisture under the carpet is what causes smells.
Test any product in a hidden spot first, and don't overwet — the padding under the carpet holds water.
When DIY isn't enough
Salt that has built up over a whole season, deep in the carpet and under the seats, usually needs steam and extraction to fully come out. That's part of our interior detailing, done at your curb — no need to drive anywhere in the slush.
Don't forget the outside
Salt on carpets means there's salt on the underbody, wheels and lower panels too. Regular exterior washes during winter — and a ceramic coating before the season — keep it from eating into the finish. More in our winter detailing guide.
Prevent it next winter
- Use deep rubber or all-weather mats from November to April
- Knock boots off before getting in
- Book an interior detail at the end of winter to reset the carpets
